I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts in 1979. After 10 years of work in a community based treatment center , I began full-time private practice.
My primary method of psychological treatment emphasizes problem solving and helping my patients change unhelpful patterns of thinking. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders, adult attention deficit disorder and alcohol abuse.
I have advanced training in psychopharmacology and am certified in the practice of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I am also listed on the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.
MY APPROACH TO THE TREATMENT ANXIETY DISORDER
My interest in the treatment of anxiety began as a graduate student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts in 1971. As part of my training I researched the effects of anxiety on athletic performance. Since that time I continued to treat generalized anxiety disorders, panic attacks and performance anxiety. I believe my expertise on anxiety is comprehensive and on the cutting edge of treatment innovation.
My approach to the treatment of anxiety begins with an extensive evaluation of your symptoms and learning your personal history and current life situation. Next we discuss the the cause of anxiety to help understand that anxiety involves a very human response to threat. I strive to help you understand that your symptoms of anxiety are the body's effort to manage perceived threat.
A number of therapeutic strategies will be implemented to help you manage your anxiety. You may learn relaxation and breathing techniques to effectively reduce anxiety. You will also work to increase your understanding of how your thoughts and beliefs can cause anxiety, and how through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) changing your thinking can decrease anxiety. I work to have individuals leave their sessions with practical tools to deal with anxiety and to develop a variety of tools in their "anxiety toolbox" to use as the need arises.
Although anxiety can be treated without medications, they can be a valuable part of reducing your suffering. Should you agree that it could be helpful, I will work with your primary physician or a qualified medical professional to determine if medications are right for you.
My office is located at 295 Washington Avenue in Hamden Connecticut
